HVDC link UK to Netherlands has gone live

Beginning of April, the HVDC connection linking Great Britain and the Netherlands (“BritNed”), has successfully gone live. This is the second electricity connection between UK and Europe since the commissioning of the HVDC link with France 25 years ago. The 1000 MW high voltage connection will transmit power in both directions, driven by supply and demand patterns and by price differentials between the two power markets. It marks another step towards a single European electricity market.

  • line commutated inverters (thyristor valves)
  • 260 km bi-pole HVDC
  • ± 450 kV DC
