Grid Restoration in the Austrian Transmission System

We had the pleasure to invite Dr. Michael Weixelbraun, executive assistant at Austrian Power Grid APG for a guest lecture within the course “Power System Control and Stability” On 23.1.2015 the students had the chance to get up-to-date information about the Austrian emergency and restoration plans, presented by a dedicated expert for power system security. Important topics like recent problems in the transmission system, restoration strategies and islanded system operation tests were covered. The important cooperation and coordination between TSO, DSO and power plant operators was highlighted. The presentation was followed by an intensive discussion.

Kickoff-Meeting of CIGRE/CIRED working group „Modelling and dynamic performance of inverter based generation in power system transmission and distribution studies”

On March 6th and 7th, the kick-off meeting of the recently launched joint CIGRE/CIRED working group C4/C6.35 „„Modelling and dynamic performance of inverter based generation in power system transmission and distribution studies” took place in Venice. The working group with more than 40 members from 21 nations is chaired by Koji Yamashita (JP) and Alberto Cerretti (IT), supported by Sergio Martinez (ES) and Herwig Renner (AT). Within the active period of 3 years, recommendations and guidelines for the modelling of converter coupled generation in stability studies in transmission and distribution systems should be developed.

“Hydro Governor as Damping Device” – PhD defense Dr. Weixelbraun

Dr. Michael Weixelbraun, former project assistant at the Institute for Electrical Power Systems (Graz University of technology), finished his PHD studies with distinction on 22.10.2013. In the defense, lasting more than 2 hours, Michael defended successfully his thesis entitled „Hydro Governor as Damping Device“. A significant part of his work was done during his 4 month secondment to the Norwegian transmission system operator Statnett. During that time first contact to Prof. Kjetil Uhlen from NTNU Trondheim was established, who acted as external opponent during the defense.

Secondment within EU project “REAL SMART”

Within the EU project “REAL SMART – Using real-time mesurements for monitoring and management of power transmission dynamics for the Smart Grid”, funded by Marie Curie FP7 People Programm, Dr. Herwig Renner will spend 3 months in Switzerland with the ABB research centre He will work on low frequency inter area oscillations. Focus is on the analysis of the influence of transmission system parameters (generation, loading, transits,…) on frequency and damping of inter area oscillations.

This research stay is the last in a series of secondments from TU Graz to abroad within the REAL SMART framework (DI Rechberger 2010 Finnland/Fingrid, Dr. Renner 2011 UK/National Grid, DI Weixelbraun 2011 Norway/Statnett). In return Antti-Juhani Nikkilä from Fingrid, the finnish transmission operator, will join our Institute in September 2013 for 3 months.

The project is scheduled for 4 years in total.
